Plastic bag tax could generate up to $23m a year: governor

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (HOI) — Gov. JB Pritzker is looking to tax plastic bags as a way to generate new revenue for the state and protect the environment.

The governor’s budget transition committee proposed a five-cent per plastic bag tax in check-out lanes to generate more revenue and reduce the risk to wildlife.

The tax would generate an estimated $19 to $23 million, depending on whether or not the city of Chicago is included in the tax.

Chicago already assesses a seven-cent per plastic bag tax.
