“Non-binary” license option passes Illinois House

The Illinois House passed legislation Wednesday allowing people to identify themselves as neither male nor female on their driver’s licenses.

House Bill 3534 passed the House on a 67-38 vote. The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Anne Stava-Murray (D-Naperville), allows people to identify as “non-binary” on their driver’s license, in addition to male or female.

The bill would also require all local governments to offer a “non-binary” option on forms and documents.

The bill now heads to the Senate.
