Public pools signal Summer fun despite recent closures

A good sign of Summer finally hitting the area: pool season.

The Washington Park District Pool opened to the public Friday.

Manager Sara Hamilton says the closure of several local pools over recent years – including Splashdown in East Peoria and Lakeview in Peoria – have hurt the public pool business.

But she also says the communal pool is a childhood tradition kids just can’t get with a backyard swim.

“I’ve seen kids…you know, grow up here, and actually one of our lifeguards started coming here when he was a baby,” she laughed. “So it’s great to see that kind of thing come from the community.”

The Washington Pool is open seven days a week.
