‘A part of the solution,’ SCUC hosts South Side empowerment walk

Getting out and getting active for a great cause, South-Side Community United for Change (SCUC) held a walk to break down negative stereotypes.

SCUC President Martha Ross says over 100 people signed up to march through Peoria’s oldest neighborhoods, raising money to bring awareness to the issues that earned what she calls ‘a bad reputation’ for the 61605 area code.

“This is more than just a walk,” she said. “We’re trying to raise the awareness and build the capacity on the South Side of Peoria for people to get involved and become a part of the solutions.”

She continued: “Deleting crime, building camaraderie between people, the police, fire department and residents.”

Leaders from across Peoria joined marchers, including Police Chief Loren Marion III, Councilwoman Beth Jensen, Fire Union President Ryan Brady and others, along with District 150 students.
