Thursday night in Tremont, people lined the streets at Tremont Park to welcome one of their own home.
Gene Neeley got to take a trip to Normandy, France in honor of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. Tremont welcomed him home with a fire and police escort. Neeley, proudly waved the American flag from an old Model T as he was greeted by his town.
Neeley’s friend, Rick Otey, said it’s important to honor men like Gene while we can.
“We’re a small town, small town America, gene’s special to us. he’s one of our probably five WWII vets still living here in Tremont and according to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs we losing about 372 of them per day so if we’re gonna do things like this we need to get em done while they’re still able to do them,” he said.
A group in France made the trip possible by sponsoring it.
