Illinois State Police: Fulton County Deputy has died after being shot

UPDATE 8:34 p.m. – The Illinois State Police posted on Facebook saying the deputy shot in Tuesday’s incident in Avon has died.

ISP said the Fulton Conty deputy’s name is Troy Chisum. He was 39-years-old.

The post went on to say:

Deputy Chisum was a four and a half year veteran of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. He was a paramedic with the Fulton County EMA and was a member of the West Central Special Response Team and the ILEAS WMD/SRT Team, Region 6. “On behalf of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Chisum. Deputy Chisum dedicated his life to the service of his community. His legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered.”


UPDATE 8:00 p.m. – Several law enforcement agencies lined I-74 near Peoria tonight in support of the deputy who was shot earlier Tuesday in Avon.

UPDATE 6:15 p.m. — Avon Police say that Illinois State Police have taken over the investigation.

The Avon Police Chief told reporters in a brief press conference that he “doesn’t believe the public is at risk.”

At this time, the suspect is still barricaded in a home in rural Avon. Several agencies remain on scene.

UPDATE 5:10 p.m.- Illinois State Police said officers responded to a battery and disturbance call in Avon around 2:00 p.m. ISP said the call involved the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.

They said preliminary information shows a Fulton County Deputy was shot and injured. They said the suspect is barricaded in rural Avon right now. Several agencies are on scene assisting, and ISP said they’re heading the investigation.

AVON (HOI) – Heart of Illinois ABC has a crew on scene of a heavy police situation in rural Fulton County. Our crew reports there is U.S. Marshal presence near 5350 Troy Rd., plus drone and helicopter presence.

We have reached out to Illinois State Police, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, and several other law enforcement agencies for more information. None could tell us what is going on at this time.
