McLean County man tries to drown K9 officer while being arrested

Shirley, Ill. (HOI) – A K9 Officer for the McLean County Sheriff’s Office is doing okay tonight (July 10), after a suspect tried to drown him Tuesday around noon.

Sheriff Jon Sandage tells us Stephen Sholty had two warrants out for his arrest when they were trying to apprehend him in Shirley. Sheriff Sandage said while running from authorities, Sholty ran into a nearby creek. When the K9 followed, Sholty tried to push the dog under water. The K9 Officer survived and managed to bite the suspect so he could be arrested.

Sholty was arrested with no further incident, but Sheriff Sandage says he’s known to resist arrest.

Sholty is facing several charges, including resisting/obstructing/peace officer, false alarm to 911, and battery.
