East Moline, Ill. (HOI) – A Republican attorney will challenge Rep. Cheri Bustos for the 17th Congressional District in 2020.
Esther Joy King announced her candidacy after filing paperwork with the Federal Election Commission Wednesday. Aside from practicing law, King is a small business owner focused on real estate for economic development.
King’s experience in marketing led her to the Northwestern School of Law where she received a JD and Master’s of Law in Taxation.
“I will raise the standard for constituent services and open communication,” said King. “Most of all, I will deliver more civility and truly bipartisan efforts to make government work better for the people of the Illinois 17th.”
According to a press release, King served as an aid worker in Kabul, Afghanistan. She also joined the U.S. Army Reserve as a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps. King currently serves as a Captain at the Rock Island Arsenal.
The Republican says she was born homeless and grew up in a converted school bus before she moved to the U.S.-Mexico border with her Christian missionary parents.
Bustos has represented the 17th Congressional District since 2013. The East Moline Democrat won re-election in 2018 with over 62 percent of the vote. Bustos currently serves as the Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Bustos has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maryland and a Master’s in public affairs reporting from University of Illinois Springfield.
