Security ramped up at PIA after vehicle thefts

PEORIA (HOI) – The Peoria International Airport is stepping up security efforts after several vehicles were stolen from the airport parking lot.

Gene Olson, Director of Airports, said it started a few weeks ago.

It’s been rental cars for the most part, but there have been a few others.

As a result, they’ve stepped up their security presence, and have had some extra help from the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office.

Olson says the best way to keep your car safe is just to be smart.

“Just don’t make it easy for them,” he said. “We have caught a few people walking around the parking lot, pulling on car doors, just to see what they can get.”

The airport has security of their own as well, including cameras and regular patrols.

Since the thefts started, Olson said the sheriff’s office has made seven arrests.
