Pritzker signs law expanding coverage for mammograms

DEKALB (HOI) — A new law is expanding insurance coverage for mammograms and more in Illinois.

Gov. JB Pritzker signed the bill into law today in DeKalb.

Previous law only required that initial screening mammograms be covered by insurance.

Senate Bill 162 expands that to require insurance carriers to cover diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, and MRI’s as needed.

State Senator Linda Holmes, a bill sponsor, says that next step is often a life-saving one.

“This is so important because this is the point where you may find something that needs additional medical attention,” Sen. Holmes (D-Aurora) said Monday, “It is imperative, as we know with any form of cancer, that the sooner it is caught, and the sooner the treatment starts, the quicker you have a chance of beating it.”

The bill goes into effect January 1, 2020.
