Changes after 9/11 mean safety, adjustments to airport security

PEORIA (HOI) – Everything changed after 9/11 – especially airport security.

Peoria airport director Gene Olson has been in the aviation industry since 1986 and was working in Evansville, Ind. on the day of the attacks.

Before that day, each airport came up with their own security measures, but he said that day changed flying forever.

“Mostly what you had before 9/11 was walkthrough metal detectors and there were even flights that started at smaller airports that didn’t get screened and deplaned into a public area at a bigger airport, then they would go through security at the bigger airport – that all went away,” he said.

He also pointed to the creation of the Transportation Security Administration as a positive for airline safety.
