PEORIA CO. (HOI) — Halloween morning’s thick blanket of snow was more trick than treat for local farmers, who have already faced quite a few challenges this season.
As November begins, many fields are still full, only now they’re covered in snow.
Farmers were already behind due to heavy rains in the spring, and the Halloween snow isn’t helping.
“I hope we get some breaks in November because we do need them,” Peoria County Farm Bureau Director Patrick Kirchhoffer said, “Only about 50-60% of the soybeans are harvested in this area.”
Of the corn crop, Kirchhoffer says only 40-50% has been harvested.
However, farmers report that the corn and soybean yield so far has been better than expected.
