UPDATE: One person killed in crash on I-74, semi driver cited

UPDATE (6:59 P.M.) — Illinois State Police are revealing more details about a fatal 3-vehicle crash that happened Tuesday afternoon.

ISP said the crash happened minutes before noon on I-74 East near Morton.

Police said the person killed was crashed into, caught between two vehicles. That person’s name is not being released until next-of-kin is notified.

The preliminary investigation shows a semi truck was driving East on I-74 and slowed down because of traffic ahead.

The silver Honda Accord driven by the victim killed also slowed down following behind the semi.

Another semi driven by 62-year-old Mark E. Elbus of Kewanee was following behind the victim’s Honda. Police said Elbus did not slow down and rear-ended the victim, who went off the road. Elbus also hit the semi in front of the victim.

The Honda’s driver was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tazewell County Coroner.

Elbus was cited for failing to reduce his speed to avoid an accident.

ISP said all lanes of I-74 are now open.

UPDATE (3:35 P.M.) — A three-car crash on eastbound Interstate 74 Tuesday afternoon left one person dead.

Tazewell County Coroner Charles Hanley said one person died as a result of the collision that happened around noon Tuesday.

Eastbound traffic has been diverted through Morton at Exit 102 for over three hours.

MORTON (HOI) — Eastbound traffic on Interstate 74 in Morton is being diverted to take Exit 102 due to a crash, according to the Illinois State Police.

The incident happened around noon Tuesday near mile post 104.
