(HOI) – The space heater is a tempting option to get us through winter…if you’re safe about it.
Officials are warning users that plugging a space heater into a power strip poses a risk.
They can overload them and start fires.
Kim Riggenbach, Assistant Fire Chief of the East Peoria Fire Department, said plugging them directly into the wall is just the first step to staying safe.
“Make sure if you’re using one, keep it in a room where someone is there with it,” he said. “When you leave the room, turn it off.”
Also, you should never use an extension cord with a space heater.
Riggenbach also said they are not a replacement for a dedicated heating system.
