Mike Rodcay spent weeks lighting his house

East Peoria (HOI) -- An East Peoria army veteran is hoping his holiday effort helps America's soldiers.

Mike Rodcay spent about four weeks arranging 7,500 lights on his home at 511 James Parkway. This began as a small project but kept expanding as he began to get the hang of it.

"When it started I was going to do just the icicle lights on gutters," Rodcay said. "Then I learned how to put lights on the roof and it turned into this."

He wants people to come by and see it, but he's also hoping they'll leave a donation. His goal is a penny per light, which he'll donate to the Wounded Warrior Project.

He says he's inspired by the generosity he saw in his 31 years in the army, especially while he served in Iraq. He would receive care packages from strangers and wanted to pay it forward.

Rodcay says the display will be lit and he'll be available to take donations on these days from 5p.m.-9p.m.:
