The new year is closing in, and with it comes our first look at recreational marijuana in Illinois. We took a sneak peak inside 'Rise Canton.' The location on Main St. in Canton was formerly known as 'Salveo Health and Wellness.'
Two weeks from Wednesday marks the beginning of legal cannabis consumption by adults 21 and older in Illinois. 'Rise Canton' was the first in Central Illinois to receive a recreational license. Other medical dispensaries in the area are working toward recreational sales also.
The newly renovated facility of 4000 square feet was added to the 2600 square foot medical dispensary. Both will operate separately. Manager Scott Miller said even though all patients could use the recreational dispensary, many of their customers were worried about their routine being disrupted.
The products themselves will be the same between dispensaries. The only difference will be the price when you check out because of a difference in tax.
"If you come into that side and have a medical card you'll pay 1 percent tax on products you purchase. The more THC, the higher the tax rate. This is just an estimate that the average tax rate on the adult use side will be around twenty six and a half percent."Scott Miller, 'Rise Canton'
Miller says they expect a line out the door when their doors open at 7:00 AM on Wednesday January, 1. But don't expect a bud buffet or blunt bouquet when you walk in. Miller says all the products will be stored in a secure vault in the back. Customers will be helped by a sales associate to navigate the menu and choose from a list of different products.
"Buying three point five grams or what is called an eight of flower or bud you're looking at around sixty dollars plus tax."Scott Miller, 'Rise Canton'
They will have over 350 different products including vaping wax, oils, lotions, pre-packaged blunts, and edibles like brownies, granola bars, and gummies. Prices range from $25 to $120 for the most expensive products.
"The Illinois cultivators have been incredible. The product lines that we have here in Illinois rival anything they have in Colorado."Scott Miller, 'Rise Canton'
The business will be cash only with an ATM in house. And with eleven points-of-sale or cash registers, Miller hopes they can handle the demand. But says they expect to run out.
The dispensary opens at 7:00 AM on January 1st. The first sale won't happen until 8:00 AM, giving customers an hour to get acclimated with the process. They will be open from 8:00 AM- 8:00 PM during the first week of sales, resuming normal hours after. Customers need a valid State issued ID or passport. Illinois residents can purchase/hold up to 30g, while those with out-of-state ID can purchase half that.
