PEORIA (HOI) -- If you thought pumpkins were mostly for Thanksgiving, the South Side Mission can change your mind with one whiff.

Although most of us may want to relax during the holidays, one person in charge of the operation says baking 500 pumpkin pies is perfect, in order to feed more than 3,000 people.

The mission in Peoria baked for 5 hours Thursday to get the pies done.

But they have more to do.

Friday, they cut the meats, including 1,000 lbs of ham, and prep the side dishes for their annual Christmas dinner.

"We feed over 3,000 people. I think we're right at 3,700 is what we're gonna feed this year for Christmas so it's all hands on deck and everybody's…it's a good kind of a busy," said Kip Perhay, Associate Director of Development.

300 drivers will deliver those 3,700 meals on the 25th and the South Side Mission will host 100 people for a sit down meal at noon.
