Crowds gather across central Illinois for first legal day of recreational marijuana

EAST PEORIA (HOI) - The first day of recreational marijuana is off to a big start in central Illinois.

Outside NuMed in East Peoria, there was a large group of people waiting in the parking lot around 10:00 a.m. Customers we spoke to outside said the store opened at 6:00 a.m., many of those people waiting to go in since that time.

The store is using a ticket system, similar to a deli line. One customer said they were in the 200's, the ticket in their hand was in the 500's.

Meanwhile in Canton, the store Rise Canton, also saw massive lines.

Heart of Illinois ABC's Kyle Beachy was there as lines wrapped around the parking lot:

Some customers waited in line from 3:00 am until the dispensary opened at 7 with the first sale taking place at 7:13 am.
