SPRINGFIELD (HOI) – Understanding the enormous importance of the actions of Illinois state government, Quincy Media, Inc. (QMI) has launched a year-round, fully-staffed, Illinois Capitol Bureau.
The bureau provides content to Quincy Media’s six broadcast and digital operations in the state. Those stations are:
- WREX-TV (NBC) in Rockford
- WEEK-TV (NBC) in Peoria
- HOI-TV (ABC) in Peoria
- WSIL-TV (ABC) in Carterville
- WGEM (NBC) in Quincy
- WGEM-FM (ABC News/Talk) in Quincy
“QMI and its operations have, for many years, covered issues of importance to the state and its residents,” QMI President and CEO Ralph Oakley said. “Collectively, our television stations in Illinois are the primary news source in 37 counties serving over a million and a half viewers.”
Quincy Media’s Capitol Bureau Chief, Mike Miletich, comes from Heart of Illinois ABC and has experience covering Illinois state government. He’s a graduate of the University of Illinois Springfield Public Affairs Reporting master’s degree program.
Quincy Media’s Capitol Bureau Photojournalist is William Hatfield, a former Springfield television station chief photographer who also has experience covering the capitol.
WGEM TV and Radio News Director Chad Mahoney, newly elected to the board of the Illinois Legislative Correspondents Association and former longtime Springfield anchor and reporter, will oversee the bureau.
“What happens in Springfield impacts every Illinois resident who watches or listens to our six stations in the state,” Mahoney said. “It’s our goal to offer reporting that digs deeper, provides context and leaves people better-informed of state government and its impact on them.”
The Quincy Media bureau office is in room 012D in the state capitol. The bureau team has complete technological autonomy; able to record, edit, report and go live to all the QMI stations.
Quincy Media has a rich Illinois history. The family-owned company can be traced back to 1835, when the Bounty Land Register in Quincy was one of four newspapers in the state.
The company started radio broadcasting in 1947 and put WGEM-TV on the air in 1953. Quincy Media provides statewide production and distribution of political debates and produces and broadcasts the Illinois High School Association football and basketball championships.
QMI operates 20 broadcast news organizations around the country, including those in Illinois. The company also owns WGEM-AM (All Sports) in Quincy and two newspapers, The Herald-Whig in Quincy and the Courier-Post in Hannibal, Missouri.
