One Class at a Time: El Paso Gridley High School

one class

In today's world, the lessons from history class are more important and relevant than ever. One local high school teacher is putting a new twist to keep students engaged. Michael Melick is a western civilization teacher at El Paso Gridley High School. He has quite the quirky, funny personality to go along with his class. He developed a special program where his students learn what its like to live in the areas they study.

"What we are trying to do this year is put the kids in the shoes of what it would be like to be a citizen of one of the countries we study. So, we're kind of doing a case study. We've been Chinese citizens for a couple of weeks, Swedish citizens, Colombians." Melick said.

Its not all reading & memorizing in his class, but activities that keep students energized and engaged. His students genuinely look forward to coming to his class to learn about history. That is especially true for his student Samantha English.

"Mr Melick, he makes things fun, and he makes things enjoyable to where you want to come in and do his work and learn about new things that he is teaching." She said.

Melick plans to use the one thousand dollars for an online article subscription service, so his students can read articles from countries around the world.
