SANGAMON COUNTY (HOI/WICS) - A Glenwood High School junior died Monday after getting the flu, then pneumonia.

A spokesperson with Ball-Chatham School District said Joey Sandhaas, 16, ultimately died from sepsis after his illness escalated.

We are also told Sandhaas used to play for the school basketball team, but was not currently on the team. In a Facebook post, the district said,

Out of respect for those grieving, the district canceled all boys basketball games Tuesday night.

Our Springfield ABC affiliate, WICS, reports Sandhaas had to be put in a medically induced coma before he died.

Sandhaas' school district also confirmed there is a GoFundMe page for the family's funeral costs and medical bills.
