(HOI) -- A local man says a weight has been lifted off his shoulders after he finally reached someone at the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

On March 22nd Benjamin Smith was laid off from his job.

He filed for unemployment and was approved.

After he certified multiple times there was still no money in his bank account.

He said he spent hours trying to reach someone at IDES to figure out what was going on.

Thanks to social media he got in touch with a woman at the Peoria IDES office and within 10 minutes his problem was solved.

"I gave that number to like 4 of my friends who were also having issues and she's apparently resolved their issues as well. That lady is a life saver and without her I think we'd all be kind of still left without knowing what's going on...The stress just went away. Now I know bills will be paid and food will be on our table," said Benjamin Smith.

Smith said he was told it came down to a clerical error.

His claim was just started so he'll have to file again for previous weeks.

A spokesperson for IDES said that as of May 21st the department processed more than 1.2 million claims over 11 weeks.
