BRADFORD, Ill (HOI) - A Heart of Illinois mother says she's thankful for the people who serve and protect her community everyday.

Tracy Pearson says her daughter Ruby was out riding her bicycle in the village of Bradford, when a distracted driver blew through a stop sign.

The 6-year old acted quickly, jumping out of harms way as the vehicle damaged her bike.

The police chief heard about the incident, and decided to go above and beyond to help Ruby get back on the pedals to get the wheels moving once again.

"Ms. Ruby here noticed that someone wasn't going to stop, she jumped off her bike just in time." says Pearson.

Police Chief Landon Horrie adds, "I just thought something needed to be done about it and I thought we got to make things right somehow, I mean here she is wanting to get out and about in the summer and she needs a way to do it. I thought the obvious thing to do is make sure she can do it safely so I thought the obvious way to do it is to make sure she can do it safely so I thought the getting the new bike was the way to go."

The driver of the vehicle did stop and apologized, even offering young Ruby cookies.
