PEORIA (HOI) - The "More Than Pink" Susan G. Komen Walk is going virtual this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The switch to a virtual event is intended to protect the health of the participants, many of whom are breast cancer survivors or are currently being treated for the disease,

Peoria's walk was supposed to happen May 9 at the Metro Centre. It will now take place Saturday, October 3. Bloomington's walk will happen a few weeks earlier on September 12.

"We still need to fundraise to support research and to support the community in different national programs," said Komen Memorial Public Relations and Marketing Director Katie Parker Cox.

"We're very excited to be able to do that. It's just going to look a little different this year," she said.

There's no fee to register this year, and the organization is introducing the "More Than Pink" app in which participants can raise money and track their steps. They're also encouraged to use the hashtag, #WalkWhereYouAre to promote this year's virtual events.

“The added benefit of this new virtual experience is that people who previously couldn’t attend in-person due to their health or scheduling conflicts, will now be able to participate and be part of the community of hope," said Linda Maricle, the Komen Memorial's co-executive director.
