Damage estimated at $300K in OSF Cardiovascular Institute fire

UPDATE (9:25 p.m.) - The Peoria Fire Department said Thursday evening's fire at OSF Cardiovascular Institute was "accidental in nature."

PEORIA (HOI) - The Peoria Fire Department is listing as accidental the cause of Thursday evening's fire that severely damaged the OSF Cardiovascular Institute.

Damage is estimated at $300,000 to the building at 5405 N. Knoxville Ave., the fire department said.

Firefighters were about 5:10 p.m. Thursday evening to a call that mulch beside the building caught fire. When they arrived, crews found the fire had spread to an outside wall.

Inside, firefighters said they encountered heavy smoke in the stairwell, and the smoke spread throughout the building.

The fire department estimated 20 to 30 patients and employees were inside. All were evacuated unharmed.

The department said a firefighter was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
