GALESBURG (HOI) - Good Samaritans came to the aid of a man in Galesburg Friday after his riding mower slid down a hill and rolled on top of him in a retention pond.

The rescue happened behind a shopping complex at 2779 Volunteer Drive in Galesburg about 9:30 a.m.

The 57-year old Galesburg man was able to keep his head above water, and two Walmart workers heard his cries for help, according to Galesburg Fire Captain Steve Selliers.

He said the employees helped keep the man's head above water until fire department and Galesburg Hospital Ambulance crews arrived.

They lifted the riding mower and freed the man, who suffered only bumps and bruises, according to Captain Selliers. The man did not seek hospital treatment.
