PEKIN, IL (HOI) - Nearly 90 jobs are expected to be created in Pekin after city council approved $500,000 for the business to expand.
Los Angeles-based company DCX-CHOL, which designs and makes military and areospace equipment, has a factory on Enterprise Drive in Pekin.
"They have indicated interest to expand their current operations due to operating in full capacity at their current location and to enlarge their footprint," said City Manager Mark Rothert.
The company wants to expand to the neighboring Gallatin River Communications building, which is currently vacant.
"The cost of entry into the facility is upwards of 2 million dollars for acquisition and remodeling," said Rothert.
The company is asking the city of Pekin for $500,000 to help through tax increment financing.
"It is important to note that the city concurrently has submitted a grant proposal to the state of Illinois under the Rebuild Illinois Shovel Ready Program," said Rothert.
If the city gets the Rebuild Illinois Grant it would directly help this expansion project.
DCX currently employs about 80 people, and with the expansion, they plan to hire over 90 new positions.
"I would urge any of the council members who are truly interested in bringing living wage jobs to Pekin residents, to require DCX to make a good faith effort, to always try and hire Pekin residents first," said resident Jim Manion.
The council nor company mentioned what those positions would be, but Mayor Mark Luft says they hope to employ the people of Pekin first, as well as surrounding areas.
If the expansion goes as planned, hiring would being in December or January.
