WINNEBAGO (WREX) — This week is another reminder for farmers to stay safe as the harvest season approaches. That’s because this week is National Farm Safety and Health Week.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the agriculture sector to be one of the most dangerous in the country.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture says farmers don’t often dedicate time to their own safety and health. It adds that its important during these unprecedented times for our farming industry to focus on their mental health.

You can also help farmers stay safe on the road.

“Be aware that they’re the big farm equipment on the road,” says Richard Beuth, the former president of the Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau.

“And when I say big, it takes up most of the road. These combines, these tractor and grain carts, even the big semis. Just please, when you’re on the road, slow down. Be aware of the farm implements.”

National Farm Safety and Health Week continues until Saturday.
