PEKIN (HOI) - Tazewell County reported 95 cases of COVID-19 Friday with 60 coming from the Federal Correctional Institution in Pekin.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons reports 74 inmates and three employees are currently considered active cases. 25 News reached out to the bureau of prisons for an interview, but they only provided a statement with their COVID-19 protocols.
It says inmates will be secured in their assigned cells or quarters to decrease the spread, but will still have access to mental health treatment and education. The bureau is also coordinating with the United States Marshals Service to decrease incoming traffic.
After 14 days, a decision will be made whether or not to go back to normal operations. All inmates releasing or transferring from bureau facilities are placed in a pre-release quarantine for a minimum of 14 days prior to their scheduled departure.
The Bureau of Prisons says any inmate with a positive COVID-19 test, or who has a fever or symptoms, will not be permitted to transfer. Visitation is suspended until further notice.
