BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (HOI) -- Even during a pandemic, a holiday tradition that honors fallen soldiers in our area continued.
Trees of Honor are now standing in Bloomington and Decatur.
Each tree is decorated with several hundred names of those who gave their lives in the defense of our nation.
This tree at the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington is nine feet tall, with gold star ornaments that include information about each hero.
There was not a dedication or lighting ceremony this year.
But it still means a lot to these Gold Star Families and parents like Frances Maddox.
"Anytime we can speak his name that is so very important to us and it really warms our heart for people to remember nd its apart of our healing process to have a tree like this," said Maddox, who is the project chair for Fallen Hero Trees of Honor.
The airport was chosen as one of the locations, so anyone who that may be returning home or traveling through can pay respect to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
