EAST PEORIA (HOI) - Joe Biden is bringing the first shelter dog, "Major" to the White House, and a Central Illinois shelter dog is winner of a nationwide contest that males her a member Major's cabinet.
Harper, a border collie from East Peoria is the winner of what's called the indoguration, becoming Secretary of Rescue Dogs.
About 700 dogs took part in the Zoom competition. It was rough, but Harper is number one, said her owner Colleen Kahl.
"You had to say what they would accomplish in the first 90 days. So I said that she would raise awareness and funds for shelter and rescue animals and organizations, and promote literacy and social/emotional development for kids as a therapy dog, and she'd reach across the aisle to her cat counterparts and try to fight for animal rights," said Kahl.
The contest also raised money for the humane association in Delaware, where the dog came from and it's President Biden's home state.
As for Harper, her shots are covered for a year, plus she gets a yearly exam.
