(HOI) - SAMS Stray Animal Midway Shelter in Hanna City has matched pets with forever homes for the past 7 years.
"Adopting is such a rewarding experience," said SAMS lead shelter assistant, Alex Menke. "You get to see a dog that may be starting off as a shy dog become confident and happy.”
Menke said when it comes to pets, companionship is key and if you're having a ruff day, they are always there for you.
“It’s just really nice to have someone to come home to that’s going to love you no matter what," said Menke. "That bonding is really important and I think especially during this quarantine time, it can really keep the spirits up.”
Whether it be a walk, playing with their favorite toys, or even just snuggling up on the couch, Menke said it's important to spend quality time with your furry friends to keep them happy.
“Sometimes it isn’t just getting the dog the extra toys or certain treats," said Menke. "It's all about just that extra attention."
Owning a pet can be a big responsibility, but if you're not ready, volunteering is always a good way to get involved.
“Being with animals just makes me so happy and it's such a great feeling to be able to help them," said SAMS volunteer, Hailey Gaffen. "When we see them go home, or we see them make improvements in their behavior, it's a really rewarding experience."
One SAMS volunteer and dog lover said having pets is a life changing experience.
“I’ve grown up with pets and I love them and they have made such an impact in my life," said SAMS volunteer, Kate Michaels. "I can’t wait to get another one in the future. You cherish all those memories and they really do become part of the family.
