PEORIA (WEEK) - What started as asking for a small favor, quickly turned into an outpour of support from the community.
Just weeks ago, Trewyn Middle School staff received an email saying, if they don't find a coach for the girls softball team, they wouldn't have a season. That's when 5th grade teacher missy white stepped up to the plate.
"I was like well I can give it a shot. I'll do the best I can," White said.
But Coach White ran into a problem, there wasn't enough equipment for the girls.
So she turned to Facebook, asking for donations, but she never expected to get such a big response.
"Instead of just getting a couple of used gloves, we were able to get everything that the girls need," White said.
Coach White says, it wasn't even an hour after posting, before several people reached out, wanting to pitch in to help buy new equipment.
"It was just so amazing to see the community come together," White said.
She was able to buy brand new gloves, bats and balls. Coach white says, they started with nine girls, but with more equipment, they now have 14.
"They are so excited. Everybody wants to try all the new stuff," White said.
Coach White says this has shown her what an amazing community she's a part of.
"You always hear the negative things. A lot of people might think poorly about Peoria, or the surrounding communities, and you just see this and you're like, that's not all that's there," White said.
The team is still in need of some supplies. If you want to donate, you can call Trewyn Middle School. You can also donate directly via Venmo to Melissa White @MWhite820 or via PayPal to firstname.lastname@example.org
