PEORIA (HOI) - A murder charge have been filed against a man for the fatal stabbing of a 92-year old retired local surgeon in January.
Peoria Police said investigators obtained a warrant Wednesday for the arrest of Robert Ely, 54, in connection with Dr. William Marshall's death.
Peoria Police Public Information Officer Amy Dotson said detectives went to St. Louis to arrest Ely with the help of the FBI and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
In January, police entered Marshall's home and found he had been stabbed to death in the basement of his North Peoria home.
In the High Point Neighborhood, where Marshall lived, a neighbor said the news of an arrest spread like wildfire.
"I think now that someone has been arrested and if this person is found guilty, I think that a lot of residents in this neighborhood will feel like justice is happening, but again, I don't think this is ever something we're going to look at and say, oh now we feel better about it, because Dr. Marshall's not here," said neighbor, Mike Murphy.
Marshall was known to be an avid art collector, but Dotson declined to comment on a motive for the killing.
The Peoria County State's Attorney's Office and federal prosecutors in Peoria and the Eastern District of Missouri aided in the investigation, according to Dotson.
Ely is being held on $5 million bond, and is awaiting extradition proceedings in St. Louis, Dotson said.
