PEORIA (HOI) — A cookout full of food, activities and COVID-19 vaccinations took place in Peoria today.
Central Illinois LGBTQ+ hosted a cookout hoping to provide a fun no cost event, while benefiting people's health. Along with music and food, health professionals offered COVID-19 vaccinations, as well as HIV and HCV tests.
According to organizer Chris Wade, providing vaccines to this community is important for different reasons.
"The LGBTQ+ population is impacted because of a lot of chronic illnesses [and] a lot of comorbidities," Wade said.
Wade also explained the importance of providing these opportunities in an environment where everyone feels welcomed.
"Some of us may not feel safe going to a clinic," Wade said. Some of us may not feel safe going to a hospital to get that vaccination."
Wade hopes people will get involved in LGBTQ+ organizations in Central Illinois to get rid of health stigmas surrounding the community.
