PEORIA (HOI) -- OSF will require its 24,000 employees in Illinois and Michigan to get vaccinated for COVID-19 by the end of September.
"It is our ethical obligation to be vigilant about the safety of our patients… We firmly believe that vaccination against COVID-19 is the best way to keep our patients and Mission Partners safe."Chief Operating Officer Mike Cruz, M.D. in OSF Statement
Currently, OSF says around 35 percent of its staff is not vaccinated. That's roughly 8,500 thousand employees.
The announcement brings up the question; Can employers require their employees to be vaccinated?
"I think it's a good idea to be vaccinated," Peoria resident Toni Rogers said. "I don't think that's, legally they can do that."
But an attorney 25 News spoke with in April disagrees. Marc Siegel says employers can require both vaccination and proof of vaccination.
"By and large, if your employer is going to require vaccinations, you're going to have to fall in line," Siegel said.
