PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Region five in Southern Illinois ran out of ICU beds.
Peoria was a part of Region two, and they had not seen a surge as large as neighboring areas.
Dr. Ben Kemp was the Medical Director of Care Hub at OSF, he said St. Francis in Peoria was willing to accept overflow patients from it's southern neighbors.
"We do get calls from Southern Illinois or even occasionally from out of state looking for beds. Everyday we look at all of our ICU requests, our real goal is to manage the sickest patients we can," Dr. Kemp said.
Part of the issue in Southern Illinois was that they only had 87 beds available, where as region two had 235 with 43 still open.
Dr. Kemp said that bed space was tight but not in crisis mode so that's why they were able to help out.
