“Ms. McKown! You just won one thousand dollars from Heart of Illinois ABC and CEFCU congratulations.”

Katie McKown is a fourth grade teacher at Hickory Grove Elementary School in Dunlap, IL. Her passion for learning helps her students reach their maximum potential. That’s why she’s this weeks one class at a time grant winner.

Her student Claire Morris says Ms McKown makes learning fun.

“She is just so so energetic. She is really good with kids. And our whole class just immediately bounces back and responds to her” Morris said.

Just from watching her interact with her students, you can tell McKown loves her job.

“It’s the funnest job in the world. I’ve always said it’s my dream job, and I plan on being here until I’m ninety. It’s what i love to do. and i love teaching and seeing them learn.” McKown said.

McKown plans to use the one thousand dollar grant to purchase new flexible seats that allow students to move while they learn. She says they help students focus during their school day.

“Just to be able to have a wobble chair where they are free to wiggle and wobble. It increases focus, and I’ve seen increased engagement” She said.

Mckown’s goal is to create a level playing field for students who are able to focus naturally… And those who may struggle a little more.
