Asbell wins heated Peoria County sheriff’s race

Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell will keep his seat following a divisive race for the county’s top law enforcement job.

Asbell was appointed sheriff in 2017 following the resignation of longtime Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy. Asbell ran as a Republican against Bartonville Police Chief Brian Fengel, a Democrat.

Both candidates aired negative TV ads against each other. Asbell also filed a Freedom of Information Act request against Fengel over the handling of a gas leak incident near Limestone Township High School in early October. The issue became a heated argument between the candidates during a recent candidate’s forum.
