Flights cancelled in Peoria due to snow

Saturday’s heavy snowfall  caused problems at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport (PIA).

Flights to and from Peoria were canceled by several airlines due to the severe weather but the airport has been working on keeping their runway and parking lots clean throughout the day for planes.

PIA officials said they have been working since midnight on Saturday to keep their runways open for flights, since they do not actually cancel them.

“That’s something the public maybe doesn’t understand because we see comments on our Facebook page asking why we canceled flights and we don’t do that. We keep the runways open and available for the airlines and it’s their decision whether they’re going to send the airplane or not,” Director of Airports for PIA Gene Olsen said.

Numerous flights were also cancelled both in and out of the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington.
