IHSA changes boys and girls state final format

The IHSA announced a new scheduling format to the Boys and Girls Basketball State Finals.

Instead of having it span across four weekends it will now take place over two.

This change begins in 2021 (through 2023), the IHSA board met Monday morning to vote on these changes.

Going forward, girls basketball state finals will be held on one weekend in 2021. This will take place on a Thursday through Saturday schedule. The boys basketball state finals will be held the following weekend with the same Thursday through Saturday format.

Currently, the IHSA state basketball finals take four weekends, dividing by class. Class 1A and 2A tournament on one weekend, then 3A and 4A the following. Girls take place at Illinois State’s Red Bird Arena, Boys take place at Carver Arena inside the Civic Center.

It is not certain that the tournaments will still be held in Normal and Peoria.

“We obviously have great relationships with both venues and host communities,” IHSA executive director Craig Anderson said in a release. “We fully expect both to bid once again, but believe it’s only fair to open up the process in conjunction with these format changes so that they can evaluate if and how it impacts them. We are not tied to any host format. We’d be open to having both tournaments at the same venue or continuing to have them in separate venues.”
