PEORIA HEIGHTS (HOI) – The Forest Park Nature Center in Peoria Heights could soon be owned by the Peoria Park District.
The Forest Park Foundation has owned the property for decades, but the park district manages it.
Two years ago, the foundation revealed that they were starting the process of selling all of their properties in an effort to close down the foundation as a whole.
Because of this, the park district wants to buy the local properties with the help of grant money from the state.
Emily Cahill, executive director of the park district, said the foundation owns about 400 acres.
“We own another several hundred on top of that so it’s a really beautiful parcel,” she said. “I think it’s one of those signature locations in Peoria that people really connect to. ”
With the potential purchase, the park district says nothing should change to the park.
A price for the park isn’t available until an appraisal happens during the grant application process.
Approval of the grant may not be known for several months.
