PEORIA (HOI) – The Dream Center in Peoria is taking a big step in combating homelessness.

They announced plans for a $1.7 million renovation of their homeless shelter — doubling their overnight capacity, adding new showers, washers and more.

There will also be separate, more private rooms for women escaping from trafficking or abusive situations.

Executive Director Andy King said the goal is to create a space that offers dignity and compassion to anyone in need.

“And so the aim is that this is the front door into stopping and ending homelessness for the people who come through our door,” he said.

Phase one of the project is slated to be done in December.

Phase two includes a full commercial kitchen and more, set to begin in January.
