SPRINGFIELD (HOI) –Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth (D-Peoria) was honored today by her Democratic colleagues at the Illinois State Fair with the 2019 Party Builder Award.
Gordon-Booth was elected to the house in 2008, becoming the first African-American woman elected to the estate legislature from Central Illinois.
She also became the first African-American woman to serve as deputy majority leader, this year.
“…it really has been the honor of my life to be able to work with so many of our colleagues to be able to push forward a reparations cannabis bill that will become the model for the country for people who want to do this and do this right,” she said.
Gordon-Booth has fought for criminal justice reform, sponsoring bills that reduce minimum sentences for some crimes.
