GALESBURG (HOI) — An apparent accidental shooting left a 14-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the right shoulder earlier this week.
Austin Sunberg, 19, was arrested in the incident and is facing charges of reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm with no valid FOID card, according to a release from the city of Galesburg.
Officers were called to the scene at 11:56 a.m. Aug. 20 at 160 N. Chambers Street in Galesburg for a shooting victim. Sunberg and a juvenile male were found in the apartment, as well as the victim.
The victim initially told police she was shot by an unknown person when she was walking across the apartment parking lot. Sunberg, at first, told police he found the victim in the parking lot and carried her to his apartment.
After police canvassed the area, they found a handgun behind Holt Plubming, 120 N. Chambers Street, which Sunberg said he placed there after he was interviewed.
A search warrant for Sunberg’s apartment was obtained after investigators interviewed witnesses, who said they heard a gunshot and cries coming from Sunberg’s apartment. During the search, police found a bullet casing and a box of ammunition.
Sunberg admitted to police he and the victim were together in his apartment and they both took turns holding the handgun. Sunberg told police he grabbed the gun from the victim when it fired. He told police he did not intend to shoot the victim.
The victim was transported to Cottage Hospital and later transferred to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria and is in stable condition, according to the release.
