Newborns wearing red hats to raise awareness for heart disease

NORMAL, Ill. (HOI) — Babies at Advocate Children’s Hospital and newborns across Advocate’s health network will wear red crocheted hats during February to raise awareness about heart disease and celebrate American Heart Month.

The Little Hats, Big Hearts initiative happens at hundreds of hospitals across 40 states.

“We are happy to once again partner with the American Heart Association on this campaign during American Heart Month and Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Month,” says Dr. S. Javed Zaidi, pediatric cardiologist at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center. “Congenital heart defects, the most common kind of birth defect, are more common than some might think – 1 in 100 babies in the United States is born with a heart defect each year.”

This is the sixth year Advocate has participated in the program. The hats are unique and handmade by volunteers.
