Londrigan to challenge Davis again in 2020

SPRINGFIELD, Ill, (HOI) — Democrat Betsy Dirksen Londrigan will try once again to take the 13th Congressional District seat from incumbent Republican Rep. Rodney Davis.

Londrigan, a Springfield-based political operative, came with a percentage point of unseating Davis in the 2018 elections. The sprawling 13th Congressional District stretches from Champaign to Bloomington-Normal to the Metro East suburbs of St. Louis.

Londrigan made  formal announcement Thursday morning at the Springfield AFL-CIO building.

“Voters across our nation sent a clear message last November that they want leaders in Washington who will stand by their side and fight to ensure that middle-class families have access to quality, affordable health care,” said Londrigan. “However, instead of listening to his constituents, Rodney Davis is at it again, putting his special interest donors ahead of the health of our families. That’s unacceptable to me, and I’m running for Congress because we have unfinished business – to ensure that people across the 13th district have access to quality, affordable health care.”

Davis is on a list of congressmen targeted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, chaired by Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Moline).

“Just this week Democrats had to pull a budget caps bill from the schedule because leftwing members of the party didn’t think it spent enough money. Democrats in the House are being pulled further and further to the left by their caucus and Londrigan and anyone else running for Congress are going to need to tell voters where they stand,” said Davis spokeswoman Ashley Phelps. “Londrigan is already on the record supporting Medicaid for All, she was endorsed by co-writers of the Green New Deal, and been supported by multiple candidates running for president. Voters rejected Londrigan because of these liberal policies just five months ago.“
