Bloomington auto enthusiasts got a blast from the past Monday night as more than 30 Ford Model T’s rolled into town.
The classic cars are on a cross-country tour as part of the Oceans to Oceans event, which commemorates a race from 1909. The drivers are on a 30 day drive from New York to Seattle.
The group’s co-chair, Jon Griesenbeck, says the riders become a second family and usually ride every 10 years or so. This trip is more than 4,000 miles and will cross through 11 states.
He says part of the reason it takes so long is the cars reach top speeds of 45 miles per hour, depending on the surface they’re driving on. They see a lot of roads across the country, and Griesenbeck said he couldn’t help but notice Illinois’ weren’t in the best shape.
“Today we ran on some gravel roads,” he said. “They seemed to be the better roads in your state. They were nice and smooth. The paved ones were kind of rough.”
