It takes a lot of energy to make fitness fun for young kids. Cassie Gauf at Farmington Central Junior High does just that. So, her student Hallie Mapes nominated her for the One Class at a Time grant.
“She’s really motivational for the kids, she is always making them smile,” said Mapes.
Gauf says she tries to motivate each student to stay fit in and out of the classroom. One way she’s doing that is by embracing new technology.
“We have heart rate monitors but we would like something that they can wear and actually monitor themselves individually. It kind of gives them a better understanding of where they are when they are working out,” said Gauf.
But those monitors are getting old. Gauf hopes to use her one-thousand dollar grant to get new ones. While many would find teaching physical education exhausting– Ms. Gauf says it’s her passion.
“I mean even stressful days you have the funny goofy junior high, elementary students that just remind you why it’s so important to keep them active and make it fun,” said Gauf.
And that’s why she’s this week’s One Class at a Time winner.
