Lincoln Branch Library celebrates 20th annual summer reading bike giveaway

Peoria, Ill. (HOI) – Close to 300 kids filled the Lincoln Branch Library in Peoria today for the 20th annual bike giveaway.

It’s all a part of the library’s summer reading program. The participants range from toddlers to high school students. To have a chance at winning a bike, they have to read for three hours per week over 7 weeks.

The bike is a big incentive for kids to hit the books.

“I’m gonna ride it. I’m gonna have fun,” said 7-year-old Caliyah Williams. “I’m gonna ride it to school and tons of stuff like that. I can do anything with a bike.”

“I get emotional a little bit about it, but it’s a fun day so I want to make it very festive and fun for them,” said Lincoln Branch Library Director Cynthia Smith. “But, it’s heartfelt.”

Smith says they gave away a record 91 bikes.
